During the course Sustainable Systems at Parsons School of Design, we were instructed to critically and creatively think of a quick solution to one environmental issue. I chose to focus on waste and consumption in the United States, and in my research I found that one issue was that people were unaware of how much then consume leading them to not be able to conceptually think of how much waste they are generating. The ‘Ecobin’ was my responsive solution to this—a smart trashcan that tracks your own waste using a scale and uploads it to a smartphone application. Within the app interface, your data is then compared to the Ecobin’s in the surrounding neighborhoods making the ultimate goal to try and get your waste to be the lowest in your area. The project was delivered in a short slide deck where I pitched the product idea to a panel of environmentalists, ran through my product and app, and then shared how this model could then be used to encourage major cooperations to do the same. The Ecobin allowed you and others to Know Your Waste.
